I have been musical all my life, thanks to my parents subscribing to a service that sent a record a month to me when I was about six years old. I have been writing since the fourth grade, and composing songs since I got my first guitar in 1963. My writing includes songs both secular and sacred, and a number of these tunes evoke my roots in the Charleston, SC, lowlands. I occasionally co-write with my longtime friend and fellow musician, Josh Jones.
I record in a home studio (something I have had at each place we have lived since 1990) where I produce CDs of my compositions for family and friends. I use Taylor and Fender guitars, Hohner harmonicas and banjo and I play a Roland 1800 electric piano, which also powers my MIDI programming. Mics are Apex, MXL and Shure. I use a HP Envy desktop and Cakewalk by Bandcamp digital recording software. Along with my primary instruments of guitar, banjo and harmonica, I dabble in drums, keyboards and ukulele. Never learned to read music, though. Additional recording and mastering is done at The Shop in Fincastle, the home studio of Josh Jones.
I am a member of the Songwriters Guild of America (SGA), the American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the Virginia Organization of Composers and Lyricists (VOCAL) and the Americana Music Association. I play and sing around Richmond with Liz Nance, solo or with my best friend, David Berry.
It was a real thrill to win second place (Honorable Mention) in American Songwriter magazine’s 2009 September-October Lyric Contest. I also was among the quarter finalists in 2023 in the SGA Pop Song contest. You can see more about my musical pursuits at my ReverbNation Press Kit.
